Most conservatory roof problems fall into two categories: leaks and temperature. Polycarbonate roofs leak at the panel joints as the seals age. Glass roofs don't leak but turn the room into a greenhouse in summer and an icebox in winter.
Repairing a leaking polycarbonate roof is possible but rarely economical. The panels themselves are cheap, but removing and refitting the bars and end caps is labour-intensive. By the time you pay for the repair, you're often halfway to the cost of a new roof.
Glass roof replacement with modern self-cleaning glass improves the temperature problem slightly but doesn't solve it. Self-cleaning glass breaks down organic matter and lets rain wash it away — practical benefit, but it doesn't add insulation.
A warm roof — insulated deck with tiles or slates — is the proper solution. It turns a room that's unusable for six months a year into a proper extension. The cost is higher than a glass replacement, but the difference in usability is enormous.
If your conservatory base and frames are in good condition, a warm roof is the best investment you can make. If the frames are old and the base has damp problems, a full rebuild might make more sense. We can survey both and give you the options.
